J&K / Janne Schäfer and Kristine Agergaard are a German-Danish artist duo in collaboration since 1999 based between Copenhagen and the Danish island of Møn.

J&K’s works unfold as colourful environments where installation, sculpture, text, sound, and performance intersect. Putting forward a radical notion of performativity in which site, materials, artists and audience all become story-tellers, co-creators and collaborators, J&K are driven to dismantle notions of identity, knowledge production and human superiority. A central concern of their artistic research is the question of time and perception beyond the human scale and how matter and sites can act as witnesses and mediators across realms.

Through their animated, humorous and fabulating universes J&K break down distinctions between the prehistoric and the futuristic, the mundane and the fantastical by means of multi-referential sculptures, collages and assemblages that combine found materials, craft, and speculative narrative elements.

Participatory and immersive formats that include multi-sensory explorations, guided meditations and collaborative rituals invite audiences to move from spectatorship into collective experiences and join the fabricated, hybrid communities across various life forms, objects and matter.

J&K / Janne Schäfer and Kristine Agergaard have since the early 2000’s developed a diverse and conceptually rich body of work presented in museums, galleries, and public spaces internationally. These include for example the Goethe Institute in Cairo, the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, the Karachi Biennial, KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Overgaden – Institute of Contemporary Art in Copenhagen, and the Liverpool Biennial. In 2026 J&K will have a large-scale presentation as part of the exhibition Parterapi at SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark.
